Brancussi Knockoff Approximately 20ft. Steel Studio Stools This work of balanced chairs activates the gallery space with the threat of collapse. The form, arrived at by playing with the stools, emulates Brancussi's Endless Column. The work is part of a series of large scale installation type sculptures created by scavenging materials from their locations. The stools comprise the main elements of these sculptures because their modularity allows me to rapidly assemble and de-assemble large forms. I am able to construct these installations in a few hours with little help adding to their element of surprise. I am most interested in the shift in the interaction between the common place studio stool and the studio building when the stools are amassed in large quantities and made to press into the building's space unnaturally. |
